About the Book
This is a story of redemption, resilience, and restoration that begins with tragedy. Katie was born amidst the turmoil of the communist movement and the Vietnam War. At just five months old, she lost her mother and nearly all her family members during the conflict, with only five siblings surviving. Raised by her sister in America, Katie faced the challenges of growing up without her parents. The journey from the East to the West was fraught with trials that left both emotional and physical scars, scars that could only be healed through love and acceptance. God was in her journey from the East to the West.
Though this testament begins with tragedy, it ultimately leads to redemption, as God’s providence is woven through Katie’s circumstances for His glory. Even in our most challenging moments, God is at work. He provides, He redeems, and He crafts our stories in ways that far exceed our own plans.

Learn about Katie’s Journey
Our family’s journey began in the Tai Dam homeland of Northwest Vietnam, but the Vietnam War and communist conflicts forced us to flee—first to Hanoi in 1952, then to Xiang Khoang, Laos in 1954 after the fall of Dien Bien Phu, and later to Vientiane, Laos in 1955, where we built a life for 20 years. The rise of communism in Laos drove us to the Nong Khai Refugee Camp in Thailand in 1975, where we stayed for four years in building 34, room 29, under caseworker Wayne Johnson, before seeking sanctuary in America. My mother, Dy (possibly Sommay), a Tai Dam who died at 19 on the Muong Soui battlefield, and my father, Bounchanh Thammavongsa, a Thai army soldier, faced immense loss, leaving me, La Soy, and my siblings to rebuild amidst cultural and wartime upheaval.
